A9 motorway urban study

It is part of the prospective study ‘Montpellier 2040’ initiated by the municipality of Montpellier, and the ‘Eco Cité’ approach of the agglomeration community on sustainable development.
In its present location, the A9 motorway creates an important territorial gap. This situation should change when this major traffic route is moved to the south (A9b) and a highspeed railway line (LGV) is created.
One of the ideas of the prospective study is to review the landscape structure and characteristics of this vast territory, i.e.:
• taking into account the North/South natural continuity,
• understanding and promoting the complexities and benefits of a cultivated or wild countryside, which in turn defines the urban continuity and the architectural diversity,
• giving reality to the territorial limits,
• using the reliefs, enclosed valleys and floodplains,
• promoting urban agriculture,
• enhancing the presence of water,
• setting a landscape scene.
